Driving Wind Berry Farm & Cafe

A small u-pick berry farm and year-round cafe on Michigan Road, unusually close to the city centre - minutes from downtown Indianapolis but with the feel of open country once you turn in. Owned and run by Josh Welch and family; picking has been going since the early 2010s and the operation has diversified steadily. 4.8 across 131 ratings. Strawberries are grown hydroponically in vertical planters at roughly eye level, so there is no stooping or kneeling to pick - the only setup like it in central Indiana, and worth knowing about for anyone with mobility or back limitations. Those ever-bearing strawberries also fruit until first frost, around October, giving a far longer strawberry window than a conventional June patch. Blueberries, raspberries and blackberries follow from summer, and there is a pumpkin offering in autumn reached by hayride. The cafe opened May 2022 in a building with a robin's-egg-blue door: espresso, smoothies, soups, breakfast and lunch, and the farm's well-liked house-made fruit popsicles. Also a gift shop, flower fields, a stage for weekend live music, and farm animals including a pony, a donkey and chickens the kids can pet. Doubles as an event and catering venue for showers, birthdays and parties. Gravel car park. Google now lists Wednesday to Saturday 8am-3pm, closed Sunday to Tuesday - narrower than the Monday-to-Saturday pattern previously recorded here.
